Birdies for the Brave Challenge 2012

Columbus Day 2012 was not just another day at TopGolf!  Although most people across the US have to work½in the DC area many get to celebrate the Federal Holiday with a day off work!  What a perfect day for us to take Military Monday to the extreme. Within 40 miles we have over 10 military bases and several hundred (if not thousands!) Armed Forces personnel that are proud "card-carrying" lifetime military members of TopGolf in Alexandria.

It was no surprise when TopGolf decided to partner with Birdies for the Brave® to host the first annual Birdies for the Brave® Challenge at TopGolf!  The Birdies for the Brave® concept was originally created by PGA TOUR player, Phil Mickelson and his wife, Amy, to support Homes for Our Troops and Special Operations Warrior Foundation.  In 2005, the PGA TOUR adopted Birdies for the Brave® and expanded the program to include a variety of military outreach efforts.  We were excited to welcome them to TopGolf, the first time the tournament has been held at a non-traditional course as most are usually held at TPC courses around the country!

An impressive 45 military members (currently serving or wounded warriors) participated for free due to the sponsorship of so many generous folks along with 60 other golfers for a total of 105 players in the first year of the tournament!  Over $20,000 will be donated to Birdies for the Brave® and Salute to Military Golf Association from this event!  We were honored that professional golfer, Aubrey McCormick, was able to lead ceremonies as the Grand Marshall while also giving tips to players during the event.  Aubrey was joined by Ewan Porter of the Web.com Tour, who caught a plane back to his homeland down under after the tournament!  Mark Pfeifle recognized all who has served during his speech and although BoozAllen Hamilton's Thad Allen (retired Admiral of Coast Guard) was delayed on a flight he was able to provide a very touching speech, read by Frank Hesson, retired Lieutenant of the Coast Guard.

This tournament would not have been possible without the support of the sponsors:

Many thanks to the incredible volunteer from Boy Scout Pack 867 and National Community Church.  Photography was provided by TJ Hernandez of NCC and Angeli Hawkins of Exclusive Day Photography.  And although we did have enough parking we appreciate the support from Boston Properties and Fleet Transportation for their offer of overflow solutions!  Thank you for your support.

Thank you to all who serve.  We are proud of you and support you!
