How Cold Weather and a Deck of Cards Inspired a New Guest Experience

How Cold Weather and a Deck of Cards Inspired a New Guest Experience

I am currently a Bay Host at the TopGolf location in Alexandria, Virginia, near Washington, D.C. I've been a Bay Host for nearly two years. I'm from San Diego, where seasons never change, (pretty much the exact opposite of northern Virginia weather-wise.)

Last winter (2012), it was pretty cold.  There were days when TopGolf was a bit slower. Sometimes I'd have the tee line to myself or share it with just one other Bay Host. I know most of our "regulars," and I think most know me. I really do enjoy what I do.  There are days where we have a lot of downtime because of really bad weather, with maybe a half-full tee line on a weekend. People are wrapped in coats and some in gloves, scarves, etc...but hey, they needed their TopGolf fix! (Who doesn't???)

It took me a few weeks to come up with something to help make the guests' experience a little more special, but then it hit me...MAGIC!

Who doesn't love magic? I've been doing card tricks since I was 16 and have always had a passion for it. So I practiced at home for a week to knock off the rust, then practiced on fellow co-workers to make sure I didn't mess up.  Soon, I started talking to the guests, usually on cold nights when they'd be sitting around and my section was a bit slow.  Their reaction to my tricks was astounding. They LOVED it. I got a lot of feedback, and over the last year, it's kinda become my "thing." Any time I see kids, I try to engage with them and show them a few tricks. But I'll tell you, it's not just kids who are entertained. Adults love it just as much.

I do this because I enjoy it, and seeing happy guests walking out shaking their heads and smiling because they don't understand what they just saw. Or if they ask that inevitable question, "How'd you do that?!?!?'"  I get as much satisfaction from their enjoyment as they do from seeing the trick(s).

I know it's a small thing, but if you ever visit TopGolf Alexandria, please feel free to ask for me. I'll always have a deck of cards in my back pocket, ready and willing to show a few tricks at a moment's notice.
