The holiday season brings many fun and memorable traditions. Each person has a favorite celebration, whether it be caroling or cookie making, holiday lights or trees; my favorite of them all is the ugly sweater.
Every year I count down the days until I can dust off (literally) my ugly sweater and dress in my holiday best for the season’s festivities. This year, I cannot wait to attend Topgolf’s Ugly Sweater Party on Saturday, Dec. 13!
For those of you who do not have an ugly sweater on hand, here are four key characteristics to look for while you are on the hunt for this season’s ugly sweater:
1. Three-dimensional features
Three-dimensional features are always a show stopper. These can be as simple as pom-poms or bows and can get as fancy as 3D snowmen, trees, reindeer and poinsettias. The possibilities are limitless and, of course, the more 3D objects, the merrier (no pun intended).
There is no better time to flaunt sequins, glitter and lights than the holidays. Just remember, if you want to stand out amongst the other ugly sweaters, you’ll have to shine.
3. Knit or quilted fabric
Everyone loves a good sweater that reminds them of their grandmother. Keep an eye out for thick, heavy-knit or quilted sweaters. If you’re lucky, you may even find one with shoulder pads!
4. Pairs well with a turtleneck
There are many button-up sweaters and sweater vests that should be paired with a bold-colored turtleneck. Turtlenecks are an excellent way to accentuate the ugly sweater and let people know that you take the sport of ugly sweatering seriously.
Lastly, don’t forget to accessorize from head-to-toe to complete your look. For ladies, I recommend pairing your sweater with some flashy holiday-themed jewelry, a hair bow or scrunchie, stirrup leggings and a pair of thick wool socks. For the gentlemen, a pair of pleated pants or corduroys, a moose mug (think National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation), Santa hat and, of course, a mustache.
