It finally happened. After some very successful years growing the brand in places such as Alexandria, Chicago and the state of Texas, Topgolf set it sight west of the Rockies and landed in the Valley of the Sun. The Scottsdale, Arizona Topgolf at Riverwalk will be the 10th site in North America once we open our doors in June. Known as one of the top golf destinations, the Phoenix Metro area was a prime spot for Topgolf to test out a “destination location” type of venue. But while Scottsdale and the surrounding area may know its golf, it did not know its Topgolf. “What the heck is Topgolf?” and “Is it like…virtual golf or something?” were common questions we were getting once our team started doing outreach. Toto, we’re not in Texas anymore!
While Topgolf at Riverwalk will have a significant number out-of-town visitors (2014 Super Bowl, 2014 Pro Bowl and Spring Training), being in a new, untapped market first meant focusing on the local community. By becoming a brand that locals know as fun, innovative and caring, a year-long fan base could be cultivated. During the last few months, our outreach team has tirelessly worked every corner of the Valley letting people know what Topgolf is all about. I have highlighted a few of our outreach events that have helped us spread the message that we care about our local community and that we can GET DOWN on a Friday night!
GET to Give Charity Drive: Topgolf at Riverwalk teamed up with GET Phoenix (Scottsdale Young Professionals Group) at a charity drive for the Arizona’s Children Association THRIVE Mentor Program. THRIVE helps teens and young adults in the Independent Living Program as they transition out of care and begin to live on their own in our community. The charity drive provided hundreds of household items for these kids as they start their new lives.
“We were humbled, overwhelmed, and overcome with gratitude for the generosity of the young professionals in the GET organization,” said THRIVE representative Sherry Paddie. “It is fantastic for young people to reach out to help other young people, creating a culture of charity.”
Not only was this a great opportunity for Topgolf to give back to our new community, but we were also able to get the brand in front of many local business professionals looking for something fun and new to do in the Scottsdale area.
Mascot Pedal Party: What’s Topgolf without some ridiculous Friday nights wearing neon and doing the Wobble?? This past month we have twice invaded the popular strip of restaurants and bars on Mill Avenue near Arizona State University. If you’re going to leave an impression on those Sun Devils that Topgolf is all about having a good time, you have to go all out.
Our team rolled 15 deep (including one giant gopher!) as we pedaled up and down Mill passing out Topgolf swag and wobbling our way into the hearts of hundreds of college kids. Countless people have shown up at our hiring events since saying that’s how they found out about Topgolf and that is the kind of place they’d want to work at. Work where you play, play where you work!
