Editor’s Note: Topgolf fans Joey and Stephanie Pierce won a trip to the American Country Music Awards in Las Vegas this April, courtesy of Dr Pepper. Below is Joey’s account of his once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The excitement started in a very abrupt fashion. This was not a situation where the excitement had time to build. I was working and received a phone call from an unknown number…I answered, and a lady very quietly started asking me questions and explaining how I entered a sweepstakes with Topgolf. I immediately thought that I was being spammed into a whirlwind of more phone calls of nonsense. However, after asking a few more questions, she stated that I qualified and was the Grand Prize Winner. Excited is the understatement of the year. I was baffled, confused, sick, but mostly on cloud 9.
After days/weeks of trying to realize that I was actually going to the ACMA’s in Las Vegas, the day finally arrived. I am on a flight with my wife wearing our awesome shirts provided by Topgolf heading to the awards. I believe we still did not realize what was actually going on, but we were going.
Of course, I am telling everybody, their brother, sister and cousin that I won this contest, and I am pretty much the happiest person on earth. Not sure if they believed me, yet next thing I know we land in Las Vegas.
Pulling up to the MGM Grand, our hearts were racing because we had no idea what to expect. We walk in, and everything screams country music. Being born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee, I felt a small taste of heaven. Country music has been a part of my life since the first time I could listen to the radio. So we check into our room and immediately run down to get our tickets for the shows! The Dr Pepper booth was waiting for us. They had our gift and tickets ready to go. At this point, I think my wife and I realized this was all too real! We are going to the ACMA’s in Las Vegas because I won a trip through Topgolf and Dr Pepper!
We both knew this would be a once-in-a-lifetime trip, so I bought a new shirt and tie to go with my suit, and my wife ordered a beautiful dress. As my wife got her hair done in the MGM salon, I got ready in the room. We then headed down to the ACMA show. Our seats were great! Also, sitting by an awesome couple from a neighboring town, Waco, TX. Blake Shelton and Luke Brian started the show off with crazy jokes and great energy. The start of an unforgettable night…
Watching all the incredible artists and shows that CBS aired to millions across the world was exponentially more exciting in the MGM concert hall. I was seeing all my favorite country stars all at once in the same place. Darius Rucker is an artist who has always produced songs that I connect with and listen to constantly. Knowing he was nominated for an ACM Award, I just hoped I would see him. Well, I did! I saw him preform his version of “Wagon Wheel,” which is the song that he was nominated for. Let’s just say, I was singing louder and harder than anyone in that building. After that performance and many others that I had only dreamed about seeing, the ACMA’s were over. Yet, I was informed by everyone around me that Dr Pepper has done an amazing job and the after party (the All-Star Jam) is going to blow everything else out of the water…
We didn’t think our night could get any better, but we were way wrong! We heading to the MGM Grand Marquee Ballroom for the All-Star Jam. We walked in, and there were tremendous amounts of great food. We plated our meals, got our free drinks and took our seats at a table. Next thing you know, we are at the greatest concert of our lives. Honestly, had no clue we would see the artists that we did. Chris Young, Hunter Hayes, Blues Travelers, Jerrod Niemann, it was amazing. Not only were they the artists on my top 10 playlist, but they performed intimate and meaningful songs that connected with everyone in the crowd. We ate, drank, and listened to the most amazing music for hours. The only bad thing about the All-Star Jam is that it ended. We would have stayed for weeks.
So we left the ballroom and started heading back into the main casino. Talking to each other trying to realize all that had happened, when I looked up and saw Jerrod Niemann. Of course, I stop him and explain how I am a huge fan, he performed amazing that night, and I saw him in concert in Knoxville, TN at the Cotton Eyed Joe! He was so nice and took pictures with my wife and I and also explained how his sister lives in Frisco, TX. Everything about the trip hit home.
That was the icing on the cake. Topgolf and Dr Pepper provided us with a trip/memory that we could have never imagined, but more importantly something we will never forget.
