What do Topgolf, superheroes and Hawaii all have in common? They're all part of a one-of-a-kind wish for a very special 10-year-old boy, Mason. Mason lives in Bolingbrook, IL, right down the street from Naperville. He loves Oreos, Cheez-Its, superheroes, the color blue and golf. He tells some pretty hilarious jokes and gives a mean high-five. Mason also has a life-threatening seizure disorder that makes physical activity difficult for him. Through Make-A-Wish® Illinois, Mason wished to go to Hawaii, and Topgolf is making it happen! But not without throwing a party first...
On Sunday, Dec. 13, Topgolf Naperville hosted 40 of Mason's friends and family for a Superhero-Luau extravaganza to help Mason build anticipation for his wish trip! When Mason and his family arrived, they were greeted by floral leis, a tiki-themed Signature Room and all of Mason's favorite things. Even some of his favorite superheroes made an appearance! Throughout the event, Mason was able to take on his friends and family in different Topgolf games, and he became ecstatic when he scored higher than his cousin! He learned some new tips to improve his swing from our Golf Services Manager and resident PGA Pro Nick Georgolas.
After digging into a Hawaiian-themed spread, Mason and family were surprised by hula dancers, and boy did they put on a show! After a few dances, everyone got in on the hula action. Mason was all smiles taking in the sight of his Dad and cousins attempting some intricate hip swaying. But right after the dancing, it was time to get back to the golfing!
Mason received a Make-A-Wish® golf bag fully stocked with Topgolf goodies to keep working on his golf game, and a snorkel kit to use on his upcoming trip! This January, Mason will be traveling to Hawaii, where he'll attend a real luau, snorkel with dolphins and visit Pearl Harbor with his Mom, Dad and stepparents.
It's easy to see this party as a luau for a 10-year-old boy, but for us it was about giving Mason and his family a momentary relief from their everyday lives dealing with Mason’s medical condition to spend quality time together and have a little fun. Seeing Mason swing a golf club, score in the green target and smile with pride made everyone's heart warm and really reminded us why CARING is so important to Topgolf. After speaking with Mason's parents, it was easy to see how grateful they were not only to be able to experience a trip to Hawaii with their son, but also to have an afternoon to just laugh, dance and play.
