Apologies in advance for getting all serious on you, but even at Topgolf we sometimes have to swallow bitter pills.
It’s been almost two years since the government announced plans to implement a new tax on drinks containing more than 5g of sugar per 100ml. The tax, which comes into force in April this year, is designed to help curb problems with increasing levels of obesity and type 2 diabetes in the UK.
The UK currently ranks as the country with the highest level of obesity in Europe – over 28% of adults are clinically obese and over 63% are overweight. If we carry on as we are within the next 20 years a whopping (no pun intended) 26 million adults in the UK will be obese.
According to Cancer Research UK, the sugar tax could prevent 3.7 million cases of obesity over the next decade. That’s the good news.
The bad news is that the tax would mean significantly increasing the price paid by our guests for the most popular draft soft drink on our menu, Pepsi.
So, after careful consideration, we have made the decision to remove Pepsi from our draft soft drink options, and replace it with Pepsi Max. For avid fans of original Pepsi, it will remain available in bottle form.
We hope you agree that this change will provide the best possible combination of price and taste. We think it’s the best way of giving our guests the choice over which product they drink while they play, but without damaging their wallets…or waistlines.
Pepsi Max fans can get their first taste of the drink at Topgolf from Friday.
